Plan a freestanding kiosk as an object in a space. The task, walking routes, viewing distance and usability determine size; stability, cable routing and service access determine placement. Decide early between display-only and touch use. Test the setup at the intended location and have mounting and the substrate professionally assessed before ordering.
Define the task and users
Is the unit showing advertising or helping visitors select a destination? A display can be read at a distance; input must be reachable and understandable. Map arrival through departure. Avoid long forms where visits are brief and decide how abandoned sessions reset.
Check size in the space
Place a full-size mockup. Check visibility, routes, doors, operating height and service positions. Screen diagonal is not enclosure width or footprint. A touch area comfortable for standing users may be unreachable for seated users. A project mockup reveals more than a catalog front view.
Accept mounting and operation together
Have qualified professionals check stability, anchoring and the substrate. Plan safe cables, power and access to player or power supply. Replacement should avoid dismantling unrelated components. Public use needs protected administrative access and a defined cleaning process in acceptance.
PLANNING EXAMPLE
Planning steps and acceptance checks
A lobby needs a touch kiosk for visitors. A mockup reveals whether service openings, doors and walking routes fit together. Test the app with seated and standing users where the project requires it. Mounting specialists then assess the substrate and anchoring. Order only after the object dimensions, user flow and service access are described together; the mockup is not structural safety evidence.
| Aspect | What to check |
|---|---|
| Check the site with a full-size object | Routes, doors and service openings remain usable |
| Test destination selection in the real flow | Users can reach the required controls |
| Abandon a session and wait | The agreed reset clears previous inputs |
What to bring to the project discussion
| Aspect | What to check |
|---|---|
| Information display | Readability and sightline |
| Touch kiosk | Reach and clear flow |
| Public route | Footprint and cable routing |
| Service | Opening, replacement and cleaning |
Three concrete next steps
- Test a full-size placement.
- Get mounting and power approved.
- Test interaction and reset with users.
Limit of this recommendation
Do not order a kiosk by screen diagonal alone. Enclosure, base and service space belong in the dimensioned plan.
