LCD, LED or a video wall?

THE DIRECT ANSWER

Choose LCD, direct-view LED or a video wall by content, viewing distance, area and service. LCD often serves single displays; direct-view LED forms modular image surfaces; an LCD video wall combines panels with visible joins. No technology wins every task. Check real content and maintenance at the planned scale.

01

Separate the terms

An LCD may have LED backlighting and still be an LCD. Direct-view LED forms the image on the visible LED surface. “Video wall” describes an assembled larger display, not necessarily a specific imaging technology. Ask proposals to identify construction, control and visible joins.

02

Evaluate content at the intended scale

Fine tables, large images and short advertising messages have different needs. Evaluate LED pixel pitch with viewing distance; LCD-wall joins may interrupt text or faces. Test the smallest essential content from the nearest and farthest intended positions. A demo film often hides these problems.

03

Budget service and signal delivery

Clarify front or rear access, spare modules, calibration and replacement. Test the signal path with the actual resolution and sources. Mounting, controller and service can be substantial costs. Define acceptance with uniform images, real content and a recorded failure case.

PLANNING EXAMPLE

Planning steps and acceptance checks

A reception wall must show both films and visitor information. Require the same small text line on a single LCD, LCD wall and LED sample. The near position matters because guests wait beside the wall. Evaluate joins and pixel structure with real content. Ask the supplier to explain segment replacement and calibration. Include controller and access in the comparison; panel prices alone would not cover the same scope.

Acceptance questions for the planning example
AspectWhat to check

Three concrete next steps

  • See real content at actual size.
  • Check near and far positions.
  • Include controller and service in the quote.

Limit of this recommendation

No universal pixel-pitch-to-distance rule suits every type of content. Sampling remains essential.
